South Clarkson

This Englewood home started with a patchy, high-water front lawn on bare, compacted soil. We reworked the grade and split the yard into two zones: a mulch planting bed with new drought-tolerant plants and boulder accents on one side, and a low-maintenance rock bed on the other. A warm-toned flagstone walkway ties them together and leads to the door.

The challenge

Compacted soil and a tired grade. Planting straight into ground like that is how new plants stall in their first summer, so the soil work and regrading came before anything went in the ground.

What we built

• Regraded front yard so water moves away from the house and into the beds
• Mulch planting bed with drought-tolerant plants and boulder accents
• Rock bed on the opposite side for a low-maintenance zone
• Flagstone walkway connecting the drive to the front door

Why it works

Two zones instead of one material everywhere: the mulch side carries the plants and color, and the rock side takes the wear. The result looks intentional year-round and uses a fraction of the water the lawn did.
