This Arvada front yard traded a thirsty lawn for a planted, water-wise landscape. Sweeping mulch beds hold cold-hardy, drought-tolerant plants anchored by sculptural boulders. A white river-rock border defines the edge along the walk and drive, and a flagstone path and classic lamp posts give the entry a finished look.

What we built

• Mulch planting beds in place of the lawn, planted with drought-tolerant perennials and shrubs
• Boulders set as anchors within the beds
• White river-rock border along the walk and driveway edge
• Flagstone walkway to the front door

Why it works

Mulch beds stay cooler than wall-to-wall rock, hold soil moisture, and give plants room to fill in. The rock goes where it earns its place: the hard edges where foot traffic and runoff would wear down a bed.
