South Newton

• Location: Westwood, Denver
• Scope: Whole-lot redesign, about 70% of the property
• Theme: High desert
• Services: Custom design, xeriscape installation, hardscaping

This Westwood project was an economical, high-efficiency redesign. About 70% of the lot was redesigned around a high-desert theme, using cold-hardy cacti and succulents, low-to-no-maintenance plants, and hardscape.

What we built

• Three outdoor rooms: a fire pit area, a dining area, and a lounge area
• A custom rock crevice garden for succulents and small cacti
• Steel cactus sculptures as focal points
• High-desert planting of cold-hardy cacti and succulents chosen to survive a Denver winter

Why it works

Cold-hardy is the key word. Plenty of desert plants handle Denver's heat and then die in January. The crevice garden gives these plants the fast drainage they need, and the hardscape gives the owners usable outdoor rooms without a lawn to maintain.
