The problem: thirsty lawns in a dry climate

Water-wise landscaping isn't "rocks and cactus"
The biggest myth about xeriscaping is that it means a yard full of gravel. Done right, water-wise landscaping is lush, colorful, and alive — native perennials and grasses, blooming groundcovers, and thoughtful hardscape that looks intentional in every season. You use a fraction of the water and get a yard that actually turns heads. For a real-world example, look at the 10,000 sq ft native garden in Congress Park, where neighbors swapped bluegrass for 22 native species and cut maintenance to once a year.
Rebates: check before you plan
Some Denver-area water providers pay homeowners to replace turf, but the programs change every year and each has its own rules. Denver Water's 2026 turf-removal discount — up to $750 off Resource Central's own turf-removal service — is fully allocated and closed to new applications (Denver Water), so Denver Water customers should watch for the 2027 program. Aurora Water's GRIP rebate pays $3 per sq ft for a traditional water-wise landscape, but Aurora has to approve the project before installation (Aurora Water).
