The finest-textured of the native prairie grasses and the mounded, formal-looking alternative to ornamental non-natives. Prairie dropseed forms a tidy emerald fountain that turns gold-orange in fall, and its flower panicles carry a distinctive coriander scent in late summer. It is slow to establish — plan on three seasons to reach full form — but exceptionally long-lived and effectively maintenance-free after that. The neatest native grass for a front-yard or entry planting.
